Biofeedback is a method of learning. When a finger touches a hot stove, and then the finger is pull back due to the pain the body feels, that information is sent to the brain where it is evaluated and a new course of action is selected for survival. That whole process occurs rapidly and effortlessly. Touching a hot stove is probably the best example of a simple form of biofeedback.
Biofeedback means information is given back to the body and mind in the present to change the bio-chemical responses in the body for the future. Although it has always been with us, it was not until the 60’s and 70’s that it gain medical credence.
In the late 60’s and early 70’s, Dr. Han Selze’s work on prevention of heart attacks was taking hold in the Western medical establishment. Medical doctors believed that heart attacks were inevitable because they believed that some functions in the body were automatic and could never be changed. Soon they learned that there were two stages of symptoms (alarm and accommoda-tion) before the exhaustion stage wherein the heart attack occurred.
Early biofeedback devices worked on the principal that heart rates, circulation of blood, skin temperature and tightness in the muscles could be affected by mental thoughts and feelings. And that began the exploration of how you can reeducate yourself to calm your brain waves (lower the Beta and increase the Alpha) and reduce your stress. Just as you learn to tighten up muscles, you can be retrained to relax them. The goal was to train people to relax certain muscles, think different thoughts and interact with the computer machine that recorded the responses. From the signals or feedback from the machine (usually a computer), people knew if they were accomplishing the goal for it would also mean relief of pain, lower blood pressure, a higher Alpha brain wave, and better health.
These past twenty years have seen the development of computerized devices that measure more than just brain waves and heart rates. They can measure the cells frequencies in order to establish the status of a health body. Every living organism has cells that operate at a certain frequencies. When healthy cells have their optimal frequency, the body’s immune system can ward off disease. Disharmony and distress lead to poor health.
